Towers in the Mist

Today’s mural

Towers in the Mist

The mist arrives in the hill town before breakfast and settles in for the week. Towers come and go above it like ships. Down in the lanes, people have stopped looking up to check, and simply assume the palace is still there.

How to play

  1. 1

Place. Drag a tile from the tray onto the wall. Drop it on another tile to swap them.

  2. 2

Turn. Tap a tile to rotate it a quarter turn clockwise.

  3. 3

Restore. A tile in its right place, the right way up, glints. Fill the wall to finish.

The small mural on the side shows what you’re rebuilding. Tap it to see it larger. Once the wall is full, a clue can point out a tile that’s wrong. Tiles that look identical are interchangeable. On a keyboard: arrows to move, Enter to turn, Space to pick up and put down, Delete to send a tile back to the tray.

A cozy tile puzzle, once a day

Azulo Daily is a free daily picture puzzle made of tiles, played in your browser. Every day there is one new blue-and-white mural, painted in the style of Portuguese azulejos: the glazed ceramic tiles that line the walls of cloisters, chapels, railway stations and old houses across Portugal. The panel arrives in pieces: forty-five tiles on a shelf, shuffled and turned the wrong way. Put it back together at your own pace. There is no countdown, and nothing is lost if you walk away and come back.

Everyone gets the same mural and the same scramble on the same day, so you can compare times with a friend. A new mural arrives at midnight, your local time. It’s free, with no sign-up and nothing to install.

Questions

When does the puzzle change?
At midnight, wherever you are.
Does it save my progress?
Yes, in this browser. Close the tab and your tiles stay where you left them.
Can I replay a mural?
Yes. Once it’s restored, Replay deals the same tiles again, and Start over does the same partway through. Your first restore is the one you share and the one that counts for your streak; your best replay is shown beside it.
Is there more to play?
Azulo Monastery has thirty murals across six acts, on iPhone, iPad and Android. No ads, and it works offline.

Azulo Daily

Mural restored

A blue-and-white azulejo mural of a fanciful hilltop palace with ochre towers, blue domes and crenellated walls rising out of swirling mist on a wooded ridge, a battlemented wall running down into the mist, and on the left a hill town of blue-tiled roofs, chimneys and a church spire stepping down the slope beside a cypress and a tall feathery tree, with a cobbled road winding up past a stone wall, an iron lamp post on a stone pillar, flowering shrubs, a chimney on a tiled roof, a tiled bench with a floral back, and birds in a sky of curling cloud scrolls.
