Pão-por-Deus

Today’s mural

Pão-por-Deus

On All Saints' morning the children go door to door with cloth bags, asking for Pão-por-Deus. At the tiled door on the corner they get bread, walnuts and a pomegranate each. The pomegranates never survive the walk home intact.

How to play

  1. 1

Place. Drag a tile from the tray onto the wall. Drop it on another tile to swap them.

  2. 2

Turn. Tap a tile to rotate it a quarter turn clockwise.

  3. 3

Restore. A tile in its right place, the right way up, glints. Fill the wall to finish.

The small mural on the side shows what you’re rebuilding. Tap it to see it larger. Once the wall is full, a clue can point out a tile that’s wrong. Tiles that look identical are interchangeable. On a keyboard: arrows to move, Enter to turn, Space to pick up and put down, Delete to send a tile back to the tray.

A cozy tile puzzle, once a day

Azulo Daily is a free daily picture puzzle made of tiles, played in your browser. Every day there is one new blue-and-white mural, painted in the style of Portuguese azulejos: the glazed ceramic tiles that line the walls of cloisters, chapels, railway stations and old houses across Portugal. The panel arrives in pieces: forty-five tiles on a shelf, shuffled and turned the wrong way. Put it back together at your own pace. There is no countdown, and nothing is lost if you walk away and come back.

Everyone gets the same mural and the same scramble on the same day, so you can compare times with a friend. A new mural arrives at midnight, your local time. It’s free, with no sign-up and nothing to install.

Questions

When does the puzzle change?
At midnight, wherever you are.
Does it save my progress?
Yes, in this browser. Close the tab and your tiles stay where you left them.
Can I replay a mural?
Yes. Once it’s restored, Replay deals the same tiles again, and Start over does the same partway through. Your first restore is the one you share and the one that counts for your streak; your best replay is shown beside it.
Is there more to play?
Azulo Monastery has thirty murals across six acts, on iPhone, iPad and Android. No ads, and it works offline.

Azulo Daily

Mural restored

A blue-and-white azulejo mural of a woman in a patterned apron at the open blue door of a whitewashed corner house, its doorway framed in carved stone with blue trim, holding out a wicker basket of small breads, walnuts and pomegranates to three children with cloth bags slung over their shoulders, a window box of coral flowers above a tiled frieze, a cloth bag and a blue-and-white pot of pink flowers by the doorstep, an iron lamp on a scrolled bracket and ivy climbing the wall, and to the right a cobbled lane of whitewashed houses with terracotta roofs, window boxes and lanterns where more children go door to door and a boy knocks at a blue door, potted plants in a blue-and-white urn, a heap of walnuts on the cobbles, a bird on a chimney and a hill town with a tower under curling clouds and birds.
